Still no sign of the Leeds Country Way official results, but plenty of events and action for a full V S Update

EVENTS

Wetherby 10k – Sunday 9 September

The race is full but Melanie Watson is unable to run and I have secured an official transfer with the race organiser, so the first to text or phone me 0777 5898 558 can have the number.  I will be at the race on Sunday so the lucky caller will be able to pay me and obtain the number.  I will settle with Melanie.  As I said, first to phone gets the number.

NB If anyone else has a number and is unable to run, let me know (by mobile) and the second to call will be lucky too

Club Handicap 10k and Pie and Peas – Tuesday 11 September

We will start the clock at 7pm precisely for the handicap, so if you’ll have one of the “lower”  handicaps, be there early!

Please place pie and pea orders, preferably by email before 10:30pm Sunday 9 Sept, or by text to 0777 5898 558 by 2pm Monday 10 Sept.

Anniversary T-shirts – Tuesday 11 September

We will be placing out second and final order for T shirts on Wed 12 Sep, so if you want one, please order by Tue 11 Sep.  Nearly 90 have been ordered so far.

Cancer Research 10k at Harewood – Sunday 16 September

We need just 3 more marshals to cover our section of the route.  Marshals to arrive by 9:15 and most will get away before 1pm.

The race made £47,000 for Cancer Research last year and they already have more entries than last year.

Harewood Recce Run – Tuesday 18 September

Regular Tuesday training will be replaced for one night only by a steady run starting from Harewood Village Hall.

From Leeds, travel to Harewood, through the lights and then first left down Church Lane.  The Hall is about 200 yards on your right (plenty of parking available).

Please arrive for 6:30 – 6:35.  We will set off at 6:45 PROMPT.  If you are late, park at Wike Lane End (the big gates on the A61 a mile before Harewood) – we will be there at 6:55.

We’ll run together for about a mile and a half and then split into two groups.  The slower group will run a total of just over 5 miles at a steady pace, out to Emmerdale village then past the estate offices at Stank and up the hill, past the Church, back to the Village Hall.  The faster group, when they reach Emmerdale, will run down to the Water Treatment Works, turn right on the road to Eccup Village and then right again on the Ebor Way back to Emmerdale, rejoining the 5 mile route, a total of 8 miles at a faster steady pace. (the last mile will be a bit gloomy but is a good tarmac path)

Anyone wanting to do the full 10 mile route should bring a head torch.

Harewood 10 mile Trail Race and 2 mile Junior Race / Adult Fun Run – Sunday 7 October

We have 30 marshals so far but need 40 more.  This is Striders’ biggest event of the year; we hope have over 800 runners in total and to raise over £3,500 for Lineham Farm.  Please come and help!

Tracey Morris at World Athletics Championships

Just in case you missed it, Tracey finished 19th in 2:36:40.  Her time was only 6 minutes behind the winner (also it was only 40 seconds slower than the second GB man in the men’s marathon).

Although it was over 3 minutes outside her PB, everyone I have spoken to thinks it her best result to date, considering the conditions.

Mark Hetherington has sent me a couple of photos http://valleystriders.org.uk/tracey.htm

From the Sporting Life website:  Tracey Morris, after knee surgery and other injury problems earlier this year, finished 19th in a time of two hours 36min 40secs.  "I tried to put it all into this one day," said Morris, who emerged to stardom four years ago at the London marathon when clinching an Olympic place as the first Briton across the line in the trial race. Morris, who suffered another fall and damaged her right knee training in Macau three weeks ago, set off at her own planned pace, but although in no-mans land at times on her own, comfortably finished the race.

From the Croydon Guardian (!)  Morris, who turns 40 next week, said:  “Delighted with that. In those conditions. I tried to put it all into this day. Even though it felt comfortable early on, I thought I’m going to pay for this somewhere along the line. Should I ease back even more? Judging by the men’s marathon, but no and I’m absolutely delighted. I was on my own for a lot of it. I was a little bit in no mans land, because I hadn’t run a marathon this year. I didn’t really know where I was fitness-wise. My training has gone extremely well. I’ve managed to increase the miles. I have worked really hard the last 12-16 weeks. But I’ve not done a marathon this year to compare, so with the weather conditions and the humidity, I really didn’t know where I was. So I really just had to go with how I felt and go by my own instincts. When I woke up this morning and saw clouds, I thought Great! I think we had better conditions than the men.”

Tracey told me it was touch and go whether she’d be running, not due to the bad knee but due to a hairline fracture in her arm when she’d fallen.  She said it had been due to a very slippery surface on the road.  You need to consult an optician, Tracey!

Tracey has now run just 6 marathons in her life, but now has a full set of Championship appearances – Olympic, Commonwealth, European and World.  Time to start collecting another set?

Leeds Country Way Relay

The second success on 2 September was for our women in the Leeds Country Way relay. Horsforth Harriers were expected to retain their title having beaten us by nearly an hour last year.  But this year there was never more than about 5  minutes between the teams.  Erica and Sharon ran fastest leg on leg 1, Dawn and Xanthe conceded 1st place but only by a couple of minutes on leg 2, Elika and Lisa kept the gap from increasing on leg 3, as did Caz and Laura on leg 4, then Carole and Hayley overtook Horsforth on leg 5 to gain a 40 second lead.  Matters were confused by the fact that both teams missed the cut-off, start so Kates, Liz, and the 2 Horsforth runners started together in the massed start on leg 6.  And some superb tactical running, keeping the Horsforth pair in sight all the way round, meant that although they lost the leg by 20 seconds, the overall team result was a win by 20 seconds (this in a total time of around 8 hours 45 minutes).  A big CONGRATULATIONS to this team, who included 5 runners new to the club since last year and one other who’d not run the LCW before.

Also in the LCW Relay, the men’s A team were 5th, the men’s vets were 2nd vets (there were only 2 teams running but we have the runners-up trophy, that’s what counts!), and our B team got round nicely.  Only one pair got lost and I will be revealing their names in the next V S Update unless some cash comes my way.

And on the subject of cash, please pay me £6.50 as soon as possible and collect your rather nice souvenir plate.

We now have some team photos on the website. From the main Valley Striders page, click on Valley Striders Photo Album, then click on 2007 LCW and you’ll find 10 photos that include 39 of our 48 runners.  Apologies to those I’ve missed, but they were well ahead of me e.g. Jerry and Graham were leaving Golden Acre Park in their car just as I arrived.

Jules will shortly be appearing in her first West End Play, “Undiscovered Country” by Tom Stoppard at The New Players Theatre, Villiers Street.

The play runs for 3 separate weeks Oct 10th - 13th, then Oct 22nd - 27th and then Nov 5th - 10th.

Here’s the link for the New Players Theatre  http://www.newplayerstheatre.com/content/default/index.asp

Here’s a picture of Jules from the handbill  www.valleystriders.org.uk/jules.jpg

Here’s Jules as we know her (pic from Chicago Marathon) http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsalbum/04_4/cm04jb1p.jpg

Jules is probably the current West End actor with the fastest marathon time and the only West End actor with plantar fasciitis!

From Andy Wolfenden

(Andy works at Complete Runner at Ilkley)

I am currently in the process of compiling a book based on a collection of light hearted "running anecdotes". These are running related snippets sourced from runners throughout the country.

These include quotes, race incidents, unusual occurrences, mostly amusing, but anything to do with running that other runners will find of interest.

I already have some great stuff, and other clubs are being forthcoming.

It would be great if Valley Striders could provide some good anecdotes.

If you could contact your members about this I would appreciate it greatly. I am sure you alone must have a few tales to tell!

I hope to publish this collection in time for Christmas 2008.

I can't promise any money for your input, but individuals will be acknowledged.

Please ask your members to e-mail me [email protected]  with their contributions. Everything in good taste of course.

Thanks in anticipation

Andy Wolfenden, Ilkley Harriers.

And that’s all folks
