Leeds Country Way – Sunday 2 September

We have 4 teams of 12 except that our women’s team is currently one short, we need another woman urgently, this is for the final leg approx 8.5 miles Scarcroft to Garforth, probably the easiest terrain on the whole circuit, so don’t worry if you’ve done little or no off-road running previously.  Race speed is not important, any woman with two legs may apply.  Please!

For the 47 of you running, I’ll be sending out estimated start times for each leg in the next day.  Hopefully each leg’s 8 runners can meet at the end of the leg, then two cars can be driven to the start.  I’ll be handing out race numbers on Tuesday night to someone on each leg, so they will be available for all our teams.  Remember to bring 4 safety pins!

If you pick up emails at work and are on holiday next week, make sure you have the list of phone numbers I sent previously!

Did I mention that we were one woman short?   (NB another reserve or two for the men’s teams would be useful, any speed will do)

Also on 2 September is the Women’s Marathon at Osaka, we believe it starts about 11pm Saturday night UK time, so tune in to watch Tracey complete her set of the 4 major marathons.

Anniversary Report

The second anniversary event went very well with 33 Striders running from Leo’s to Woodhouse Moor and back.  John Umpleby took photos at Leos, then by the Henry Marsden statue on Woodhouse Moor (the official start of the Meanwood Valley Trail).  On the way back we took a brief detour to 18 Lucas Place where the club was founded in 1982, and John took some more photos.

Back at the Club, Sylvia Watson cut the silver ribbon and declared open the Women’s showers.  81 barbecue meals were eaten.

Finally we made 3 presentations

-          a V S Performance award to Adam Parton,

-          honorary life membership to Lou Gilchrist (accepted in her absence by Max Jones).  Lou holds the W70 world record for 5km, 5 miles, 10km, 10miles and half marathon.

-          honorary life membership to Joyce (the Voice) Lambert – “Valley Striders number one supporter for over 15 years”

Thanks to John for the photos and to Pat Umpleby and Connie Cluderay for setting up shop to sell the Anniversary T-shirts.

The consensus of opinion was that the run to Woodhouse Moor and barbecue should become an annual occasion.

Omission from the last V S Update – thanks to Carole Schofield for the anniversary cakes

I am collecting all the photos from the events to put on the website, I hope to complete this in the next week.  If you’d like a copy of any photos on the website, I will be able to email a higher quality copy.

Some Messages

Great North Run – message from Melanie Watson

I was signed up to do the Great North Run in September but I’ve had to pull out for personal reasons.

I have two single en suite rooms booked at the one of the colleges in Durham which includes transfers to the start and from the finish of the race.  They were £95 each but we’d take offers.

I know they’re expensive but we left it quite late to book them and had to take what was available, but they were non refundable so now we’re a bit stuck!

Chicago Marathon – message from Natalie Crossland

Some of you will be aware that Tim and I are doing the Chicago Marathon in 7 weeks time, the training is well underway and we have decided to put all the pain we will go through towards a good cause. We are supporting a close friend, who lost his wife after she ran the Nike 10km last year, in his efforts to raise money for CRY- Cardiac Risk in the Young.

Every week 8 'apparently' fit and healthy young people die in the UK from undiagnosed heart conditions, and Cardiac Risk in the Young, or CRY, are fighting to drive that figure down through a number of incredibly worth while projects.  These include raising awareness of cardiac risk in the young, funding medical research into sudden cardiac death, donating cardiac equipment to hospitals and doctor's surgeries, supporting a national heart screening programme, funding the centre for Sports Cardiology at the British Olympic Medical Centre, and helping families affected by sudden cardiac death.

If you are happy to sponsor Tim and I you can donate through the justgiving site: www.justgiving.com/natandtim if you would rather donate via the traditional way I have a sponsor form - let me know how much you want to donate and I will make a note and collect after the marathon.

You & Your Lungs – Saturday 6th October, 09.30-13.00 – email from Leeds University (via Mick Tinker)

We are delighted to announce that we will be continuing with the You & Your Body project until the end of the year. Add to your learning about your body by taking a fascinating look at the lungs!

Come along and take a virtual tour of the lungs, find out about how exercise affects your lungs and learn more about the damage done by smoking. Listen to talks, have a go on interactive exhibits and talk to expert doctors and scientists. See some of the cutting edge research going on in Leeds and elsewhere and find out more about what the University of Leeds gets up to!

Tickets are limited but are free of charge. Small community groups are particularly welcome. Refreshments will be available.

To book your free place(s) please visit www.leeds.ac.uk/medicine/yourbody and complete the booking form.

Tuesday Training – message from Jonathan Brownbill

Just out of interest I compared my 5 1/4 mile handicap race time with my 5 mile race time I ran on the 18 March 2007 at South Leeds. The South Leeds 5 mile race time was 37 mins and 53 secs compared to last weeks race time of 35 mins 23 secs, that's a full 2 mins 30 secs quicker. I'm chuffed to bits to have improved by this margin in just over 4 months and the only explanation I can offer is Tuesday Night training.

Anybody who wants to improve must attend Tuesday Nights Training week in week out, both Liz Wood (nee Adams) and myself are evidence of what can be achieved in a relative short time. So Bob, I would just like to say many thanks for the wonderful training you organise and run (that’s worth a pint for you next week, Jonathan) which has resulted in my own improvement. My next goals are to run a sub 40 min 10k, a sub 1 hour 32 mins half marathon and to conquer the nemesis which is Patrick 'the plodder' Barrett.

Two Oceans Marathon – from Annemi Van Zyl
