LEOS – CAR BREAK-INS

There have been a number of break-ins recently at Leo’s, including last Tuesday night, when radio, wallet and phone were stolen from Nick Barnes’ car.  The previous Saturday, 3 cars had had glass broken.

So if you’re training at Leo’s on a Tuesday or use Leo’s as a base for a training run any other day of the week, lock your car securely and keep your valuables and other possessions out of sight (and not in your glovebox).

We are now advising that you park your car the far side of the Clubhouse where it is visible from the bar (and also further for thieves to make their getaway).

YORKSHIRE VETS RACE REPORT (from Geoff Webster)

On what was usually a V.S. training evening there was a tremendous turn out of Club members in order to support the Y. V. Grand Prix Race.  53 people were engaged in organising the smooth running of the event which consisted of 159 runners (yes 1 supporter per 3 runners!).  This number does not include G.W.’s mammy who made a large proportion of the sandwiches.

The course was laid out by GW, Andrew C, Sylvia and Jim & Lyn (2nd claim members).  Jim & Lyn also ran the race.  The start/finish/timing/results area was organised by Bob J, Paul H, Mike & Eileen Crosfill, Mick T and Peter L.  Car park marshalling was a team working for Paul F and Max.  The sandwiches were distributed by Joyce L and Pat Umpleby.

The marshals, too numerous to list, were positioned at short intervals throughout the 5 mile course.  This was necessary due to the twisting, turning and heavily wooded nature of the course and also due to the fact that one section of tapes had been removed by a passing tribe of vandals.

V.S. was represented in the race by a solitary runner (we could only spare one).  This was Carole Schofield who finished 2nd W45 and got a prize.  Carole ‘paid’ for her run by baking 120 bins for the post-race feast.

Not surprising that there seemed to be one or two minor ankle twists due to the rough underfoot conditions of the Meanwood Trail but nothing serious.  One runner, however, finished with a cut to the head due to him coming into contact with an overhanging tree branch but he didn’t let this slow him down and managed to finish in fourth place.

The Yorkshire Vets gave a glowing report on the race and the venue.  This was entirely due to the enthusiastic support given to the event by V.S. members and supporters.  So thanks to everyone who helped out on the night.

RACE REPORTS

Welsh 1000 Metre Peaks (from Mick Loftus)

Back to Snowdonia again this year for the Welsh 1000m Peaks (22 miles 7000 ft ascent).  It was cool and cloudy at the start.  The tops were in cloud.  I felt good but when we climbed into the mist things got tricky.  I was with about 6 other guys progressing gingerly through the 10m visiblity on the Carnedd range.  Then a woman with a Eryri Harriers appeared out of the mist, she was obviously a local, we all followed her for the next 30 minutes around what she told us was her regular Sunday training run.  She went on to be the first female finisher.  Eventually a diminished group dropped out of the mist to the A5 at Ogwen.  Then it was up over the Glyder range again into the mist.  I was on my own now and was reduced to a slow jog with map and compass.  Eventually I decended down to Pen y Pass with only Snowdon to go.  After the previous 4 hours of running I found the climb up the Pyg track slow and hard.  I got the top and finished in 5:14:54 just under 4 minutes down on last year but up to 12th place from 17th.  It was won in 3:55 by Colin Donnelly from Lochabar AC, there were 72 finishers. No other Striders ran!

From George Black

Just an update. Ran in the Beveridge Park 5K series on 18 May. Very like Roundhay with a similar hill which was negotiated twice. Temperature was ideal but wind in excess of 25mph made it a bit difficult at times, especially with a relatively small field. There were 62 finishers and I was first over 65 in 30th place in a time of 20.31. The winner's time was 16.09.

The duathlon training is going OK. With just 4 weeks to the Edinburgh event there is now no time to get over any injury so I am trying to be as careful as possible. I am coming down to Leeds on 19th June, new grand daughter is due end of this month, and I may get over to Bolton for the British Masters 5K Road Champs. Are any other Striders taking part? I took part in the British Masters Relay recently but ran very poorly and reckon I cost our over-60 team the silver medal. To make it worse second place went to Bingley!!!. It was nice to see the lads from Bingley and hear the Yorkshire accent once more.

From George Black again

Asics Haddington 5 mile, time 33:37, position 42, winning time 26:13.

European Duathlon Championship 16 June Edinburgh.  Representing G.B. won the 65-69 age group by 8 minutes.  5K run, 37K cycle, 5K run. Conditions horrendous!!!!!!.

Hope to be at the Club this Tuesday.

Tracey is ready - Report on Welsh Athletics website - Jun 18 2007

TRACEY MORRIS considers herself fit enough to contest the marathon at the World Championships in Osaka after testing herself in yesterday’s BUPA Great Women’s-Only Run in Sunderland.  Morris felt no ill-effects from the knee injuries which she has been suffering from and caused her to miss the world trial race staged in conjunction with the London Marathon in April.  The 39-year-old Welsh athlete, who sprang to fame when emerging from fun runner status to win the Olympic trial three years ago, was eighth in yesterday’s 10 kilometres race.

Unsurprisingly she was no match for Kenyan winner Rose Cheruiyot, who destroyed the opposition over the last two kilometres, clinching victory in 33minutes, 32seconds.  Cheruiyot, last autumn’s Amsterdam marathon winner, beat off the challenge of former French 10,000m champion Hanan Farhoun by 18sec with Kenya’s Edinburgh-based Catherine Mutwa third in 33min 47sec.

Morris, however, relished getting back into action for the first time in three months.  “I’m not far off from where I was last year when I ran here and I felt no problems at all, although I definitely need to getter fitter,” said Morris, who clocked 34min, 59sec.

Morris, who missed a huge chunk of her winter training programme, added, “Everything’s been going really well in the last few weeks, but I’m having to make up for lost time.  I’m now doing 90 miles a week, the biggest mileage I’ve ever done in my life, but I’ve no other option. Normally I would have eased down and rested before the race, but after all the training I’ve missed, I’ve got to keep pounding out the miles.  Really, just as in the past, I’m very lucky Dolland & Aitchison my employers still support me massively with time off.”
