Sport Direct XC Sunday 18 February

Thanks to Mark Hetherington for supplying the following details.

The penultimate race in the series is this Sunday at Bramley Falls Park (on the right hand side of the A647 Leeds-Bradford Road as you drive from Kirkstall towards Rodley). Usual start time (11.00am, registration from 10.00am onwards), cost £2.50 (food and showers afterwards at Kirkstall Leisure Centre).

The course is quite hilly, may well be fairly muddy, and is suitable for spikes or studs (trail shoes should be OK unless it is really muddy).

As it says on the Abbey Runners website, it isn’t just the 4 women and 8 men ‘counters’ who are important on Sunday, runners are also needed to push the opposition counters down the finishing order!

We need a good quality and quantity of Striders on Sunday to maintain our challenge for promotion!

Striders PBs and Performance Awards

Just before Christmas, Steve O’Callaghan brought along his best race times at various ages and Alan Hutchinson brought along a proposal for an award scheme for current Striders.  We are going to go ahead with both of these, and confirm the details in the next few weeks.

We will be collecting ALL Striders PBs and ABs (age-bests, 5 year bands) in a database to have available for the Striders 25 year celebrations in July.  Have a look on the website  www.valleystriders.org.uk and look in the yellow club section for “Runner Performances”,  we already have an Excel format to collect the data and sample reports for each runner.  Send your PBs and ABs to me in a format similar to that on the website.  NB I’m hoping someone will volunteer to input this data!

We will be collecting ALL Striders race times for 2007 onwards for an awards scheme.  The scheme will work on the something like the following lines: There will be gold, silver and bronze times set for each race distance for each age group.  Then say if you achieve bronze performances at 4 different race distances you will receive a bronze medal.  If we wanted more levels we could have 7 levels and issue coloured certificates using the different colours of judo belts.  Ideas welcome!   We’ll maybe have a big discussion on 6 March when Hutch is back from Kilimanjaro.

Women aged 18-40 required for research

From Mark Hetherington (Abbey Runners)    Calling Lady Marathon Runners: I am supervising a student project, looking at metabolism, aerobic capacity and running economy in female distance runners. We are looking for experienced female distance runners between the ages of 18 and 40, who have preferably completed at least one marathon (although we would also be interested in you if you have runs lots of half marathons, long off-road races etc.). It would involve 3 visits to our laboratory during the next 2 months: one short visit to undergo a brief medical, followed by 2 visits of 2 – 3 hours each to do a series of treadmill running tests (one of which will be a ‘maximal’ exercise test). The benefit to you would be that you would get a full ‘athlete testing’ report, similar to those that we do on a semi-commercial basis for elite runners at a cost of £100 a throw! Such a report can be very useful in helping you to plan your training. If you are interested, e-mail me [email protected]
