Sport Direct XC Sunday 18 February

The next race will be at Bramley Falls Woods.  We need good teams of men and women to maintain our challenge for promotion.

Another local race, head out of Leeds on Kirkstall Road, turn left at Kirkstall traffic lights past Morrisons and BHS/Clover, across the little bridge and bear right up the old Leeds Bradford Road for just over a mile, Bramley Falls is on the right.  Arrive to register between 10:00 and 10:30, race start is 11:00.  (if there is any change to these arrangements I will email next week)

Everyone who runs has an effect on the overall scores, because any team who is missing a runner is penalised by the number of points for last place, if you run, that last place is one additional point, it might make all the difference.

Liversedge Half Marathon Entry – this Sunday

Marshals Required

Meanwood Valley Trail Race – Saturday 14 April, we have 10 marshals and need 60.  This race raises about £1,000 for Lineham Farm Children’s Centre, but needs you to marshal, please!

Roundhay Pulse Race – Sunday 20 May (new date), we have 4 marshals and need 12.  (We supply the finishing line team and a few key positions, the rest is marshalled by charity volunteers).  This race raises money for the British Heart Foundation, so if this charity is close to your heart, come and help please.

Latest Grand Prix Positions

Are on the Valley Striders website.  Eric Green is the only Strider to have completed all 5 races, but there are 4 Striders who have run 4 and there are 55 Striders and 6 second-claim Striders already featuring in the table.  www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsgp07t.htm and www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsgp07r.htm

Ackworth Half Marathon

It is likely that we will include this in the Grand Prix.  Although it is just a week after Spen and East Hull 20 and a week before Baildon Boundary Way, it may well suit many Striders who don’t fancy 20 miles (i.e. most of us) and who missed the closing date for Baildon.  Ackworth is gently undulating, 7 weeks before Leeds half so an ideal race to check your preparation if Leeds is your main target for spring 2007.

Race Dates

There is an updated list of dates on the Striders website  www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsdates.htm   Let me know of any local races that I’ve missed!

Message from George Black

Hi Bob, I know it was a long time ago but I also got a British Team Marathon Gold at Turku at the 1991 games. I believe Max has also achieved a 'gold' on at least one occasion.

I am now concentrating on the duathlon and won the Scottish series for the over 60 age group last year. I am now training for the European Duathlon Championships which are being held in Edinburgh this year on the 16 June. One of the qualifying race is being in Fife on the 25th March so the problem will be to be fit enough to qualify for the British Team but not so fit that I cannot hold form until June. This is a different situation from the athletic worlds where anyone who wants to enter can do so without qualification. The other difference is it can cost over £40 to enter the qualifying race. You then have to pay a further amount to advise them that you wish to be considered for the team. Then you must buy the GB strip which costs another £55 for the tri suit alone. There is also the likelihood of having to make a payment towards team expenses. I don't know what the cost of entering the actual championship is but I am trying to get Louie to take out a second mortgage. The world duathlon champs are in Hungary this year but no matter how it goes in June I will not be going there. So next time you are asked to pay £5 to enter a race keep this in mind. Oh and I should have mentioned the warm up races leading to the Champs involve a good bit travel and entry fees in the region of £20. HELP THE AGED Regards George
