We have achieved the minimum requirement (4 women, 9 men) but this assumes everyone is fit to run, so we still need plenty more (e.g. I notice our Lyke Wake men are missing).  It is the 4th best event in England (after the Harewood Trail, the Meanwood Trail and the London Marathon).  Cut-off is to let me know by 11pm Thursday.  NB if we don’t have a full team of women and a full team of men on the day, I’m going to join Abbey Runners.

Sport Direct XC

We had a successful day at Golden Acre with 13 men and 4 women racing, the results are not available yet but I am expecting that we’ll finish in the top 3 (maybe even top?) of division 2 for both the men and women.  Promotion is still in sight!  Next race at Otley Chevin on Sunday 28 January 11am, details to follow

Yorks XC

I haven’t managed to find the results for these.  Anyone who finds them, let me know and I’ll publish the V S participants in the next V S Update.

Brass Monkey Entry

I might know where there is a race number available (currently belonging to an M under-35), so if you’ve read the 13 rules (http://valleystriders.org.uk/borrow.htm) why you shouldn’t swap race numbers and still think you qualify, please email me

Baildon closed

And I know someone who just missed the closing date by 1 day, so if you’ve an entry but won’t be running, I should be able to organise an official exchange.

“Diet and Nutrition for Endurance Athletes”

John O'Hara from the Carnegie Faculty for Sports and Exercise Science at Leeds Metropolitan University will give a presentation on: "Diet and Nutrition for Endurance Athletes"

This will be of interest to anyone interested in training for, or participating in Endurance activities such as triathlon or marathon running where nutrition is a key component of a successful race.

This will take place in the David Lloyds Campus Room at 18:30 on Tuesday 16th January.

Anyone wanting further information should contact Bill Murphy by phone (0113 269 2158) or preferably by e-mail at [email protected]

Message from Ruth Anderson (in U.S.A.)

Thanks for keeping me on your NewsLetter. I do still enjoy reading all that is going on with the Valley Striders. I miss not being able to run in cross country events here. That really is my favorite and your XC schedule sounds even better that ours here in Oregon.

(Ruth is a friend of Max who visited us when she was in the UK to run the marathon in the World Vets Championships in 1999.  Her visit was the same date as her 70th birthday and we made her an honorary member to celebrate this)

Message from Maddy Illingworth (in Spain)

Thank you keeping me up to date with Valley Strider news via emails. It's nice to know what's happening whilst I am miles away.

I'm very pleased to say that my achilles are on the mend! Largely due to taking on board Jill Halstead's (podiatrist) advice and also by being able to run off road in gorgeous surroundings in absolutely superb weather! I have been running a bit further each week and am now up to 5miles............albeit slowly...........but am pleased with my progress. I couldn't run at all last summer so this is good!

Gerald and I return about 3rd or 4th of March and I am looking forward to runs-now that I can again!- from Old Leo's.

Happy New Year to you and all Valley Striders. See you soon.
