Showers

Thank you, the generous donations have now exceeded the required £1,000 and we have given a cheque for this amount to Leo's.  However, having seen at first hand the state of the ladies changing room / showers, this could also do with some modernisation, so the extra donations could go towards this.  We'll discuss this at the AGM, in the meantime, don't stop sending your shower fund donations!

West Yorks Cross Country League

This is a series of 4 races, held between October and December (see dates above)

Last year we had well over 40 Striders entered and on average there were 9 women and 18 men running.

There are separate races for women (approx 5.5km) and men (approx 9.5km).  And this year there are vets prizes in 5 year age bands.

It is very very competitive at the front and very very sociable at the back.

The first race is on October 15, but entries for this race must be with me by September 24.  It only costs £6 to cover all 4 races (and it's also £6 if you only run 1 race), please make cheques payable to Valley Striders and send them to Bob Jackson, 4 Malthouse Close, Scarcroft, Leeds LS14 3DS.

Results

European Marathon Chmpionships at Gothenburg

Tracey finished 16th out of 34 starters and 29 finishers in 2:37:34.

Steve Cram, commentating, said "another gutsy run, she's coming in for 16th place with the rain lashing down"

Paula Radcliffe said "she has had a lonely run, got detached early on, but has been able to pick athletes off as they have suffered.  She's produced another consistent and solid run, she hasn't had the ideal buid up in terms of training and preparation, hopefully she'll build on this race for the future"

Brendan Foster said "it's been a hard demanding difficult run in cold and wet conditions. A good solid performance by Tracey, she'll have another year's training then the world championships and then Beijing beckons for her as one of Britain's top marathon runners"

In the post-race interview, Tracey, looking less bedraggled than 5 minutes earlier, said "the race didn't go that well, it was dreadful for the first two laps with a bad stomach which eased off as the run went on.  The last 3 months training has been a better build up than for Melbourne.  But today has been difficult with the weather windy and raining and the course winding and up and down"

Asked about her plans for the future she said "I take each race as it comes.  I'm a little bit disappointed today, but it's one more experience and hopefully I can move forward again"

Catch up with Tracey's career to date on http://valleystriders.org.uk/tracey.htm   (that's where Tracey looks when she wants to know what she's done at previous races!)

Another useful web page is http://www.mothernature.com/Library/Bookshelf/Books/19/218.cfm , but my own personal solution is always to take two Rennies about 90 minutes before a race.

Isle of Man Half Marathon

Paul White wrote "Just to let you know that I finished 2nd M55 in the IOM Half Marathon and received an engraved trophy.  My time was 1:33:33 and I finished 26th overall on a course which was hilly for the first 5 miles with a strong wind blowing particularly for the first 6 miles or so.  It's the first time I've done this race and was very pleased with the outcome, and having to wait for the presentations!"  (This was Paul's first trophy, he's now looking for a cabinet)
