Career Profile Although talented as a youngster, running for Welsh Schools, Morris turned her back on the sport until she was into her thirties. She ran her first marathon, for charity, in London in 1999 where she clocked 3:39:21 but she was not to really step things up until she became a veteran. Morris began to impress late in 2003, running a half-marathon PB of 76:34, and then an even more impressive 33:23 10km, but it was her early form in 2004 that suggested she was on the verge of international recognition. She recorded a series of PBs at the half-marathon and also improved her 10km best so went into the London Marathon with confidence, where her 2:33:52 secured the AAA of England title, took more than an hour off her best and gained Olympic selection. |

Form Guide Made a great start to 2004 with victory in the Helsby Half-marathon in a PB of 74:22, then improved further to 73:44 when winning at York a week later. A 10km best of 33:41 followed a further week on at the Dewsbury 10km and then came a 10 victory at Pocklington in 56:39. Preparing for her first serious marathon, she won the Hull 20 (19.4 miles) in 1:56:21 and added 10km victories at Wakefield (34:00) and Salford (a PB of 33:22) to go into London with great confidence. She finished strongly in London and passed Birhan Dagne to win the AAA of England title and more importantly win the Olympic trial in a PB of 2:33:52 to book her ticket for Athens. A month later she ran 33:53 in the Great Manchester Run. Won the Thirsk 10 in June in 57:21. |
