Athletics: Morris ready for challenge - Dec 23 2005

Phil Blanche, Western Mail

OLYMPIAN Tracey Morris has won her fitness race for Commonwealth Games selection - and promises to be at her best in Melbourne.

The Anglesey-born marathon runner won her place on the now 21-strong Team Wales athletics squad by proving her fitness earlier this month.

Morris, 38 - who had been given until this month to prove her fitness for the Welsh athletics squad - cruised to a victory in the Bedford half-marathon in a time well within the selection criteria.

Welsh Athletics director of coaching Phil Banning said, "Tracey is an excellent talent and has proven her calibre as a world-class athlete on the international stage.

"Her performances in the latter stages of 2005 have demonstrated that she is back to her best following her return from an injury picked up at the London half-marathon in March."
