Harewood Pace Run – Sunday 27 February 2005 at 09:00
Full Details of Route
- Start from the corner of the Car Park Field nearest the Village Hall. NB this is different from last year.
- Run to the car park entrance. Wait for permission to cross Harewood main drive.
- Then straight across and after 50 yards continue through a gate into the big field ahead. NB This is different from last year.
- Continue straight ahead, after 100 yards, keep just to the right of a fence. At the end of the fence, turn left past a barn and through 2 gates. (There is no clear path but this is good running).
- Turn right onto a good path and follow this steadily uphill for over ½ mile.
- Go through 2 gates, turn right, go through another gate and then steadily downhill on a good path for ¾ mile. The path is a bit rougher towards the bottom of the hill. There is a fence on the right which then stops for the last 200 yards at which point you get a good view of Harewood House. The end of this fence is the 2 mile mark.
- Through the gate at the bottom of the hill, ahead, then left and right, now steady uphill on a good path. Follow this path now undulating for ¾ mile. There is only one path junction and here you turn sharp right (but straight ahead is a dead end in 20yds)
- At the path crossroads(*), turn left. Go up a short hill, you will see a big house on your right and Emmerdale Village to your left. The top of this short hill is an accurate 3 miles and a good time to check your pace.
- Continue straight ahead for nearly a mile, on a reasonable path, passing a broken gate on the way to another gate which leads onto a tarmac road. 4 miles.
- Turn right onto the tarmac road and run for nearly a mile (almost flat), passing a farmhouse on the right.
- Just after the farmhouse, turn right onto a track. 5 miles. Pass the café (unfortunately closed for winter). This is a bit muddy here.
- This track goes for about 1¼ miles. It turns right, left, right, left, right but there are no signed paths off. The last two bits may be slippery but are not uneven.
- You’ll now see Emmerdale ahead. You come to a T junction. Turn left. Beware of slower runners coming the other way who are 3 miles behind you!!
- Pass the big house on your left and Emmerdale on your right. Come to a path crossroads(*).
- Turn left for 100 yards and then very sharp right.
- Head down a very rough path for 150 yards. Take care!
- Look for a left turn and take it (straight ahead is a dead end!). This path is more downhill and more uneven, but only a further 100 yards. Take care!
- Through a gate, and on a good path along the edge of a field (fence and woods on your left, lake ahead to your right).
- At the end of the field, bear left and through a gate.
- The path is now really good but uphill for 200 yards.
- It now joins a tarmac path, bear left onto this path.
- At the brow of the hill (7 miles) if you look straight ahead, you can see Almscliff Crag, famous for rock-climbing training!
- Continue on the tarmac path downhill. Swing left then right and uphill, through a gate, passing Harewood Estate offices on your right and uphill on this tarmac path.
- Approach a cattle grid. Go through the gate to the right of the grid (it is dangerous to cross the grid)
- Note that you are in a deer park. In the rare event that one heads for you, please take avoidance action
- Continue on the tarmac path, flat and then a little downhill.
- At the path crossroads, swing right and start a steady, l-o-n-g uphill for ½ mile.
- Approach another cattle grid. Go through the gate to the right of the grid (it is dangerous to cross the grid), turn immediately right and then after 30 yds, turn left through a gap in the wall.
- Continue ahead through a gate and you’re in the far corner of the Car Park Field. 8 miles.
- Continue ahead for 400 yds, toilets and water are ahead.
- Reach the corner nearest the Village Hall (8¼ miles).
- Start your second lap. Again, wait for permission to cross Harewood main drive.
- Round again
- If, after 16½ miles, you want some more, then you can do an extra 5 mile lap, by running to the path crossroads* at Emmerdale and back past the Estate Offices.
- Hot drinks will be available in Harewood Village Hall.
